The Black Hair Story

So I was doing a little looking around on the net this evening, when I happened upon this article. It pretty much time lines the journey of African-American hair. Its amazing to see where we have been as a people, and how much our hair has affected our lives and the opinions that we have of others as well as ourselves. Much of the negativity, and  social dogma associated with natural afro, kinky, curly black hair dates back to slavery time. Due to some undoubtedly unfair treatment that the slaves received upon their arrival to America, an inward dislike of our skin color and hair texture was born and spread through out generations.
Even today there are still some roadblocks and detours in society that try to make the people of African descent ashamed, or afraid to wear their natural hair. In many professional environment it is prohibited to wear locks, fros, and cornrow styles. Why are these styles considered unprofessional? As long as I do my work, and have a pleasant attitude should it matter? Last week I decided not to care so much about what the office would think and just be me in my crown and glory. Well I actually ended up with several compliments, surprise surprise. In today's world, these types of styles are definitely being seen as more acceptable, sespecially by my white peers/counterparts. Its a beautiful thing to see that we are moving passed, the errors of yesteryear and embracing each others' differences.
